Decided to challenge myself with putting a character on a horse for some reason, then I scoped out some inspiration. I found some great artwork by some great artist when checking out behind the scenes of "How To Train Your Dragon" and I've been humbly watching "Road To Eldorado" the past few days. So I guess in my mind this is some weird combination of the two. This is one of my early attempts at caricature with an animal,and of course working on entertainment value in my drawings, I also decided to play around with some flat gray values, good exercise.

This post is in recognition of the talent,drive,and overall enthusiam that has gone into a great friend and dare I say "colleague" of mines thesis no need for names check out this link http://lecheproject.blogspot.com/and you will get all the introduction you'll ever need!(CHECK SIDE BAR FIREFLY) A while back I posted some initial sketches and early concepts for the project, suffice to say that this thesis has grown into something memorable, with a bunch of crew members who got on board knowing full well that this project was a special one. All the time and effort that has been put into the film by him and his team shows through the deceptive effortlessness that comes across on screen. I have had the privilege of being a apart of that initial experience and feel more than honored to share a tiny portion of the spotlight that is "Firefly." My job today is spreading the word and sharing with a broader audience something I feel you should also have the privilege of being apart of. Deadlines are fast approaching for many end of year projects and screenings and this Thesis is no exception!. So go bask in the concepts and awesome animation they've got going along with all the blogs and links attached to the site, up top is the official poster that was released by the Firefly team. Todays sketch is homage to walking around my the college the other night and finally realized how infinitely cool the custodial staff is here ( we've had a few talks). plus they get to wear these enormous jet packs that make the entire computer lab your working in smell good! they have teleportation and flying capabilities too. Good-day all just thought I'd post these concepts that pertain to the "CP" post from earlier. As always another key element in deciding a look for your character, are the "turnarounds". I think I'm getting there but he still needs more work. so here are the gesture lines and then color.Overall I tweaked some elements here and there and droped in some more or less solid color. the discussions I've been having revolved around the notion that the environments the prince would find himself in would be riddled with color in contrast to his overall darker, and more bland tones. so feel free to take a look. These in addition to the previous post are some early ideas for the little story i have fizzling in my head for my character design class. The semi-naive quick witted prince, the girl who is the quintessential street smart thief. And the man shrouded in mystery. These are all the first passes on the characters including some of the sketch book thumbnails I worked on in order to play with minor design elements and personality. I plan to sketch out the entire line up and see what results I get. stay tuned.

As always the preliminary stages of some new character designs. Just finished these up for class hopefully I can get a solid body of work from the theme I've got going. I was basically sketching and thought of Aladdin or the typical peasant boy falls in love with princess. But instead I wanted to switch the roles. which isn't anything new either I just though I'd take a crack at something that might be fun to do. Lets see what happens. Some character stuff I whipped up. Exploring shapes and line and contrasting lines, straight versus curved, and learning to draw through the character and not around it. Its all about trying to convince your audience that the image is existing in a 3d dimensional space on a 2 dimensional plane.....well at least that's what the books say( cough cough)

To get a feel for animating characters I thought about watching some dvds and sketching sequential frames to study some movement. I landed on Pirates of the Caribbean and started these line drawings from there. Attitude, posing, the basics. Good exercise.

Pantomime

Pantomime was the main goal for this last assignment, we were assigned a generic character and told to keep his body language clear and concise. I made some headway with my drawing after reading up on alot of old school artist who really dig into what it is they're creating. So I really kept it loose so I could get in there with the movement and action. Originally the character was a bit bulkier but when my proffessor was helping me tweak some frames for emphasis on action. He went in there with some dynamic shapes and tore the lid of the thing. SO I went back and really tried to feel out the character. He still needs some inbetweens and break downs so that he runs even smoother,but for what its worth the little project taught me alot. "Remember to get to know your characters, they'll like you more!"

Recent preliminary sketches for the walk cycle. I was trying to get to know the character and I made some headway and the walk turned out ok, but there were some technical issues with it. (cough cough) alright animation basics 101. like super basic. This was cool. It's not super fancy but it got the job done. I tried getting some weight and volume into my character, and my professor got into timing and editing with the 1's and 2's bit. Cool stuff. Just drawing in the library and in class, i was watching some tutorials about how you can squeez in a figure or get a sense of volume from clothing alone. If your trying to capture someone quickly out in the open world it seems like the logical approach so it yielded interesting results, I think I use to try it. Things would get all fuzzy these felt a bit tighter. I had fun with these but I need more practice and need to do more so lets see what happens. I'm still working on the other stuff so I'll keep it going and post when it's more solid... need some color and value in my world!!

Thought up a little motley crew and as I was playing with different ideas I thought of incorperating hockey gear on my misfits as that would be a cool and effective touch. I'm trying to establish a process so I took up my sketchbook hashed out sum ideas and beefed them up on sepreate paper so now in order to finish these drawings I have piling up. I've decided to try a dead line inking technique for these guys, (feeling inspired by a wicked cool concept artist) and from there drop sum color in. So in essence the main focus is those shapes and a constant vison of what I want the end product to look like that's why I drew them light and tried to press those shapes so lets see what happens.

So these are the cleaned up looks for these initial characters, with our DETECTIVE and his love interest high on top of the list. I think this is going to be the working (stress on working) aesthetic for the characters in this series. As I said before a disheveled, lumbering, brutish looking detective adds some flavor to what I had originally planned and I'm going to keep pushing the envelope and see what some more silhouettes and shapes test might churn out in time for all his arch nemeses. if you've never heard the infamous "My Funny Valentine" song covered by so many great musical talents, you should. when I create for this series that's all I listen to, look it up and see if you get the idea. stay tuned for the updates. From the previous post this mash up of images was set up to give a sense of what was going through my head when trying to solidify a look and aesthetic ( I love that word), which was the next step,( we were also steadily narrowing down the characters for another line-up, soon to follow). It came to a point where I said.. you know what this still isn't working. Especially after a critique I had. the class tossed around interesting ideas but for some reason I wasn't content with my detectives outward appearance anymore... I thought it would be more interesting if his looks played no part in winning him the ladies.Just his wit and no mess attitude. A seasoned detective. check it out! more details to come, the sultry femme fatale (working on names) and just a tip of the iceberg as far as his opposition goes. I'm trying to build this dark and twisted world from a solid foundation. Comment 'n check it out!

One of my many assignments in my bag 'o' workload was to build some characters from the ground up. No solid story plot, but enough meat on the bones to create a solid cohesive batch of characters. Being that these characters are geared towards animation I decided to keep the look simple,(well...duh) BUT!! try to capture some personality. I couldn't help but visit my old detective friend from from my fall semester days.. I felt like I didn't do him justice so a while back, since I saw a window I jumped through it. More details to come on that front these were the selected silhouettes from the couple rounds that I did. Check 'em out!

Recently I was asked by one of my home-skillets, to help out with concepts for a senior thesis project he's tackling. Aside from the fact that his ideas are solid, and his drive is nothing short of inspirational, I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to do some critical thinking thanks to him and feed off some of that energy. So were moving things along 1 step at a time. This is the initial look and overall feel for the main character. I don't think its my place to divulge all the details about his project but time will tell so stay tuned as I reveal the awesomeness, in the mean time I'll do my part. Every now and then I'll post these updates here and there,. Hes got a whole ton of images from more earlier works that I did for the project, these are just nitpicked for my blog. Blogger's, I've finally made it back to update this vessel of mine. Ive got some recent finals and personal projects coming your way ready to share and ready for some input and insight. I'm on my spring break now so now is the perfect time and oppurtunity to upload,and see what folks ahve been up to, hope everyones getting inspired and trying there best to stay inspired! up top Ive got a little peek at one of the short stories I worked on for my visual story telling class, just basics in trying to get an idea of the look and feel of the story. I know I haven't posted in a while but I haven't been in idle mode, I've been keeping busy, most definitely. Maybe one day me and my art director can look back at this blog 10 years from now and he'll say, "man you sure did suck!"(pause) but your hella good now though. So the moral of my imaginary story is to practice, practice practice, and I'm here trying to practice what I've been preached. PROJECT: MARSHALL (Concepts) Hawthorne CITY

HAWTHORNE CITY- This is the courtyard scenario, where the citizens would come to pray. Here I tried to give insight to what the ghettos of Hawthorne would look like and where Marshalls story would really take place I'm going to flesh it out some more but in the mean time try to get a sense of what principles this city might have been built on and where it has ended up today. I was inspired by some of the earlier scenes in blade runner, so I'm going to strive to make it feel even more cluttered and clamored, Neon lights and steam rising from manholes in the underground. Here I have the original and the slighty expanded version which I feel immerses you a bit more into the scene. I'm gonna go get to working these projects. Till next time!

PROJECT: MARSHALL (Concepts) Environment

Here it is Hawthorne City, this was my second attempt at an environment, these are the line and value samples just to get an idea. I honestly approached this much differently than the last. Ofcourse I incorporated perspective but also I played with my shapes a bit more to get that illusion of depth in the piece, and to have a feeling of an extreme foreground element while looking as far out as the eye can see. so this will eventually become a courtyard of some sort. Ive really enjoyed the process in creating environments so expect more!

Here's a close up of the Mask I promised, you decide which one feels darker? as I said I had to make changes because I made changes in maquette, so in that respect I had to make the neccesary tweaks to the original (top) so that both the character poses and the maquette matched up.

In addition to everything else a vehicle was required as well, so to push that realm further I whipped up a simple tech vehicle, I kinda like these! still needs some color so I'm gonna play around with that and see what results I get, in the mean time here was the simple line drawing done at the classic 3 quarter view and then the tweaks I made to change things up a bit. obviously inspired by speeders and such, I labeled this as your standard Hawthorne City (where the story takes place) hover car. Just imagine him hopping into this and giving chase to a big alien nasty! yeah...cool.

Here is the more mysterious character who I am also still exploring, and letting my imagination run wild when deciding what it might look like underneath the draping, although his skeletal structure hints at it we're still not sure what it could be, Especially since he can consume a person whole, but how? stay tuned to find out! The mask on his face was inspired by some tribal mask I did some research on with a little twist. I thought it would be interesting to have a somewhat demented look to the mask like an almost smiling face that sits on top of this dark silhouette that we cant see adding more mystery the character, in the end I had to make slight changes so that the render reflected the maquette which I also had to build ( post images soon!!) so I'll post that up, just to show the subtle differences.

I'm getting ready to post the full values, but in the mean time here's the rough process. I decided some where along the way that this dark being could have something or someone to lure in his victims and its through this little his victims become the pray, the cool thing is imagining what might actually be underneath this huge shawl especially since the tentacles hint at something menacing! still contemplating what weapon would be present, when the former detective when on a crime smashing spree I decided on this sub-machine slaughter-fest of a weapon. Basically if he grenades hes got it, if he needs semi automatic or single shot he got it. and it sits comfortably on his back as well so hes an all around trooper in this instance.

In this line up were including character poses, a vehicle, and an environment all still in progress but, still telling one cohesive story and giving you a sense of what the realm must be like in this futuristic world Detective Marshall lives in. #1 Marshall and character #2 The dark being, One of the many enemies who he faces off against Marshall in the story.

Here I dropped in some color as well and really tried playing with the depth and with the mood and ambiance of the environment to help tell story and to tie the two together. I also wanted to give the water a misty type feeling, along with the lanterns and again fireflies, I also tried toggling with the background dropping in waterfall that would hint at the spout not too far from the bridge. Overall I thought it turned out kinda cool but I think this environment will be fun to take another crack at and shift things around. color is a heck weapon to have in ones arsenal, so its something I'll keep practicing! All in all a city on the sea. wait.....where are the people.?

Dropped in some color loosely, there needs to be more contrast , but I tried a thing or two, I'll come back around on this one, but in the meantime I thought that maybe adding some fireflies would spruce it up add a little more depth and tell a little story, along with this whole glow worm effect. A little moss closer to the water line as well. I figured glow worms could be one interesting light source for these underground dwellers.

I should've stuck with fortress idea, but I went ahead and tried to see what a waterfall might look like. so I dialed back the rocks and beefed up the water. So in the end kinda has a different feel to it...less structure more rubble.

Again how the Uninhabited idea started with some form of architecture. after doing research on cave openings and such I thought this type of entry into the cave would be kinda cool. A dark and foreboding situation, revealing the great monument.

This location started out rough....real rough.. but I thought if it were more like ruins maybe that could tell some sort of story, again I'm gonna take another crack at this one too and see if I can expand on the idea, cause technically ruins could have mean they were inhabited at some point which defeats the purpose. None the less I thought about having water be a dominant character, along with rocks because once inhabited these people built into their environment, they didn't wipe it out, but take a look at what did and didn't make it.

Not too long after getting into adding more details my dry cave dwellings became an underground boat city obviously needing water...just something I really wanted to try out and get a good feel for. More than likely I'm going hit the drawing board again for this one but in the mean time these were the results. I tried giving a sense of reflection from the water onto the walls and such. I'm still wrapping my head around the importance of value and trying to push my darks and my lights.

So here is when I settled on what my first official environment would look like. Using perspective to tell a small story..... still lacking value and color I thought it was pretty solid for the most part. I got a feel for some type of dwellings here.

The next step further down the road, was Environments. Inhabited and uninhabited but they had to be on the same planet and if anything some type of progression from one to the other. Naturally a lot of factors have to be considered when putting together a concept for an environment, but not to the point where you don't want to think anymore. So I decided my concept would involve a city maybe underground. Initially I did a ton of research on what a city in the furthest layers of the rain forest would look like so the thumb lean in that direction....but in the process I had an idea to flip that entirely, and make these people underground dwellers. so check out those thumbs!

As the title says, creating vehicles and environments. Form vs Function. These were done a while back but none the less were one step forward. so the plan was to create an organic and a technological vehicle set. The organic vehicle after much pondering I decided to hit the drawing board again with that one but in the meantime here is small insight into how the technological came to be. It still needs work but I pulled some cool knowledge from it. The bottom thumbnail was a first timer process, but apparently it is a favored approach when figuring out a solid clean vehicle design. so silhouettes then a fleshed out 3 quarter gray marker technique( seen at bottom) scanned and then painted in Photoshop. yeah.......it was a long night. Obviously inspired by what a lot of us are , the genius of hover vehicles and pod racers, and the ocasional floating motorcylce, just straight conceptualizing for a fantasy type realm. in this case who cares how it works.......it has to look cool!

PROJECT: MARSHALL

OK, OK so basically I have a few items to post up, and I haven't had a chance to because I lacked the software now that I'm home, but after getting my hands on it, I can post up some stuff on my own terms! but I figured I'd start with The Detective Marshall story done as a digitally colored comic. As I previously stated a 3 page story. Now I have the entire story drawn inked colored and lettered. Unfortunately I can't figure out how to get the finished, finished version on here so I might just have to put the colored versions without the lettering. In the meantime a foot in the door for a cool story telling opportunity.

This character however I decided to use to wrap things up for the semester, so I also re-created him for the concept realm. I would honestly like to push everything much further but I made some interesting discoveries when creating this entire plot-line, especially as far as the digital realm was concerned. First time for everything!

QUICK-Character SKetches

These sketches are for a final project I am currently working on in my digital coloring class, and these were just some quick character sketches,I was trying to figure out what shapes worked best for these characters and what told a small story about their personalty while still keeping the look simple. With the main character, I thought it be kind of cool to go about creating a mini-series with a clear plot line that showed personal growth within the character among other things. Telling short stories as finished digital comics I think would be a cool project to work on!

Step-2: This next step, is designing the character based on a selection you've made from your silhouettes and then fleshing it out some more, this is where basic design aesthetics come in handy and saying to yourself, "yeah these shapes might work" or.....nope..next!

Concepts

Currently attending the Savannah College of Art and Design, I recently joined a conceptual illustration class and since the beginning of the semester I've been learning more and more about the creative process behind creating characters, vehicles, and environments all quintessential elements to story telling, which is why concept artist.....well do what what they do! Design books of that same category are always fun to read and provide a wealth of knowledge for the hungry reader, the aspiring artist, or the dude that just wants to see cool stuff! But for those of us who just want to learn a bit more and expand... one book I highly recommend is THE SKILLFUL HUNTSMAN, a great read for those learning even the most basic conceptual approaches.

Step 1- Silhouettes : when creating a character one likes to think of it as ICONIC, believe it or not figuring out what shapes work and automatically say what the character (vehicle, environment, etc. is about before even glancing the detail makes for an ICONIC character! which is something stressed in my courses....and believe it or not it's more important than one might think....shapes shapes shapes!! what says this characters a bad guy or an advocate of pure good! so here are some of the silhouettes and shapes I started out with originally when coming up with two combatants( that was the objective of the project)

The beginning as always is the hardest part. because nothing is as important to me than growing as an individual and as artist." " I'm an aspiring conceptual artist who knows that there's no better place to start than with an idea..because without ideas then we just wouldn't function. In the this day and age there is nothing but the fiercest and toughest of competition out there in the industry, in the world for that matter, so one would not be doing himself justice by sitting around and waiting for an opportunity to drop in his lap....Knowing that, the best mentality to have is to go out there and get what it is you want...and that ladies and gentlemen is just the idea!
